Personal Branding: The Ultimate Guide

We’ve all looked ourselves up on Google, whether it’s for work, education or just looking at how you appear on search engines. Personal branding is people’s perception of you or in other words your reputation. It is the appearance you display in your life towards the people in it, and the impact this has, both inside and outside your career. Your personal brand defines your brand identity and helps provide the following benefits.

Become Relatable: By developing a personal brand you become more approachable by revealing more about yourself. This will also assist in building trust and authenticity.

Create Brand Identity: Personal branding will make sure that people know what to come to you for, and that they will be able to rely on you for specific things.

Generate Opportunities: Your personal brand will expose you to greater opportunities such as projects, interviews, collaborations, and the like.

Differentiate yourself: Creating a personal brand will allow you to show off your unique expertise about yourself that set you apart from others in your area of specialization.

Now that we understand the benefits of creating a personal brand these are the steps to follow in order to successfully make one:

  1. Personal Analysis: Understanding yourself fully which means analyzing your strengths, passions, values, and inspiration.
  2. Specify a Goal: What do you hope to achieve in one year? In five years? In ten years? This way, when you speak about yourself or others speak about you, you will be known for this vision and people will remember you because of it.
  3. Specify a Target Segment: Find the group of people that would be interested in your brand and/or your story. This could also be brands and other entities you would like to be associated with. Specifying a segment allows you to tailor your communications to target them successfully.
  4. Develop Your Story: Like any good brand, you want to use all the information you’ve gathered until now (your strengths, passions, interests, target audience) and define your own unique narrative.
  5. Build a Digital Presence: This means setting up a website and social media platforms for your personal brand. This will be the primary tool you use for communication. These platforms enable opportunities to present themselves for you.
  6. Stay Consistent: Branding is an elusive process that requires time, energy, and commitment. Staying on top of your personal brand is equally important as creating it.
